Hills Killer Information

Hills Killer Competitor Notes
To ensure your ride is safe and your route is straightforward, please read this document carefully.

Registration
Registration will open at 9am and close at - 11am at your chosen start point.

3 HILLS - CHALE GREEN STORES, CHALE GRID REF: 486 798
7 HILLS - AFTON PARK/APPLE TREE CAFE, FRESHWATER GRID REF: 348 864
14 HILLS - LOWER HYDE HOLIDAY PARK, SHANKLIN GRID REF: 581 818

All rides finish at Lower Hyde, Shanklin where there will be refreshments and entertainment.

The ride is made up of a series of checkpoints that are placed across the route, which will be identified by an Ordnance Survey grid reference. The co ordinates for these check points will be given to you on the day and they will follow a slightly different route to previous years. This is an orienteering event, so grid references will not be given out until the day itself, and we may need to make last minute changes to the route.

Once you have registered you will be issued with a SPORTident Dibber that you will use at each checkpoint. This will monitor your progress and log your time around the course. If you don’t have your own dibber you can hire one on the day for a deposit of £20 in the form of a cheque payable to the Isle of Wight Council. Once you return the dibber to us at the end of the event you will receive your cheque back. Uncollected cheques will be destroyed.

You will need to bring:

  • Cycle Helmet (you cannot start without one on!)
  • Ordnance Survey Map (Outdoor Leisure series 29 or 1:50,000 Land Ranger series 196)
  • Food/drink and energy bars, adequate for the distance
  • £20 deposit in the form of a cheque payable to the Isle of Wight Council (if you wish to borrow one of our dibbers)
  • We recommend a puncture repair kit, spare inner tube and pump.

Please adhere to te following rules/conditions, observing the Country Code and Highway Code, respecting other users of the countryside:

No riders will be allowed to start after 11.30am from any registration point. You will be given your start time upon registration and asked to be ready to set off at that time. No rider will start before his or her designated start time. Please ensure you arrive as early as possible.

Also there will be buses running outwards from Shanklin to Freshwater at 9am, and then returning from Shanklin to Freshwater at 3pm. Please book in advance if you require transport after the event, payment will be required on the day. SPACE IS LIMITED

At each control point, place your card in the box. Any missed or wrongly punched checkpoints will mean disqualification from the event.

Please remember that this is an orienteering event, and NOT a race. Riders are invited to enter the ride on the understanding that it is for personal achievement only.

Medical Emergencies
In the event of needing first aid please contact Claire Critchison on 07970 009 989 giving clear directions or location markers to assist in locating you. If the need is of a serious nature please call 999, and then 07970 009 989.

ALL riders are required to provide their own hydration & energy bars. Water will be available from each start point, and the finish. There will also be a watering station at North Court Down (near TV mast) for the 7 Hills competitors and at Freshwater for the 14 Hills competitors.

Special notes

A road descent down Cheverton Shute will need extra care.

Out of bounds sections that do not represent bridle or cycle paths will be marshaled this year and will carry a half hour penalty if used (even by mistake!!) Please make a special note of these when plotting your route.

YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO USE FOOTPATHS.
A pump, toolkit and spare tube(s) is recommended in order to help yourself or others in the event of minor breakdown.

All riders, friends and family are very welcome to join us at the finish point, with free parking, music and refreshments.

Please be aware that videos and photographs may be taken of this event for publicity purposes. If you have any objections to your picture being used please advise the registration staff.

If you have any further queries then please contact us or telephone 01983 823070.

ENJOY YOUR RIDE…

This event is organised and run using the software SPORTident and this is included in your entry fee.
SPORTident equipment is used to identify, time and score competitors in many different types of event. The competitor carries a small electronic SI-Card. This is dipped into electronic stations, which are located at each checkpoint.

At the end of the ride, the contents of the SI-Card are downloaded into a computer. Competitors are immediately given a printout that provides a summary of their performance. The results are also uploaded onto our website.
