Cycle the Wight

Details of the 2010 event will be added in spring 2010.

Sunday 20th September 2009

Well done to all those that attempted the Cycle the Wight Route this year. It was once again a great day for cycling on the island and approx 600 riders took part.

There were a few problems with vandals on the course who removed the temporary direction signs at Havenstreet to the Ryde checkpoint and we are looking into an alternative for this next year.

Cycle the Wight & Shorter route

The 70 & 50 mile routes follow the Round the Island cycle route which takes in minor roads and lanes wherever possible. The route will be ridden clockwise and participants should follow the blue & white highways signs with a blue island and white cycle, which are numbered at strategic points.  There are diversions for the Ryde and Yarmouth checkpoints so keep an eye out for the temporary signs.

The 50 mile route does not go to Yarmouth. The route will be signposted from Chale just after the Blackgang checkpoint. And take you through quiet lanes to Merstone where you will join the Cycle track through Newport all the way to Cowes. From Cowes it will signposted to the Floating Bridge where you will once again join the Round the Island route.

There is a short gravel cycle track on the 70 mile route that may not be suitable for some road bike tyres. It is only a short track route (approx 2 miles) but you may take the road around the track if you wish.

The routes are marked at main junctions, however you are advised to take a map of the route with you, and these can be download from the internet: www.sunseaandcycling.com/routes.asp

An Ordnance Survey map of the Isle of Wight (Explorer OL29) is also advised.
