HILLS KILLER - SUNDAY 27th SEPTEMBER 2009

Hills Killer News:

Following the Hills Killer event last year we received complaints from local landowners regarding gates being left open and rubbish left on the route.

The Isle of Wight Cycling Festival takes it's countryside and environmental responsibilities very seriously and expects competitors and their supporters to do the same. It is important for us to leave as little impact as possible along the routes that are used during the festival.

We hope that this has been an isolated incident however, if a similar situation occurs during this year's festival we will, unfortunately have to reconsider the future of the event.

The ride is made up of a series of checkpoints that are placed across the route, which will be identified by an Ordnance Survey grid reference.  The co ordinates for these check points will be given to you on the day and they will follow a slightly different route to previous years. This is an orienteering event, so grid references will not be given out until the day itself, and we may need to make last minute changes to the route.

Once you have registered you will be issued with a SPORTident Dibber that you will use at each checkpoint. This will monitor your progress and log your time around the course.  If you don’t have your own dibber you can hire one on the day for a deposit of £20 in the form of a cheque payable to the Isle of Wight Council.  Once you return the dibber to us at the end of the event you will receive your cheque back. Uncollected cheques will be destroyed.

You will need to bring:

ü      Cycle Helmet (you cannot start without one on!)

ü      Ordnance Survey Map (Outdoor Leisure series 29 or 1:50,000 Land Ranger series 196).

ü      Food/drink and energy bars, adequate for the distance

ü      £20 deposit in the form of a cheque payable to the Isle of Wight Council (if you wish to borrow one of our dibbers)

ü      We recommend a puncture repair kit, spare inner tube and pump.

Please adhere to te following rules/conditions, observing the Country Code and Highway Code, respecting other users of the countryside:

No riders will be allowed to start after 11.30am from any registration point. You will be given your start time upon registration and asked to be ready to set off at that time. No rider will start before his or her designated start time. Please ensure you arrive as early as possible.

Cut off times

All riders must reach the finish by 18:00 (all riders must be able to complete their course in this time).

14 Hills riders must reach  the halfway marker by 13:30

If you are unable to finish for any reason, you must notify one of the following:

Claire Critchison: 07970 009 989 or Elaine Cesar 07970 009 909

These numbers are for this purpose only please DO NOT use for any general enquiries.

Recorded Finish Times

Your recorded finish time will be when your Si-Card is inserted into the finish SPORTident box. It is NOT when you enter the grounds of thr finish point.

Travel, Transport and Accommodation

All riders are responsible for their own travel arrangements. The distance back to Freshwater is approx 20 miles by road.  We have made arrangements with Wight Bus for transport, either at the start or finish for the 3 and 7 hills at £6 per head.  This means you can park up your vehicle in the knowledge that you will not have to cycle back to your start point, or can get a lift back to your car at the end. Also there will be buses running outwards from Freshwater to Sandown at 9am, and then returning from Freshwater to Sandown at 3pm. Please book in advance if you require transport after the event, payment will be required on the day.  SPACE IS LIMITED

If you require ferry travel to the Isle of Wight or accommodation then take advantage of the special rates offered by Red Funnel or Wightlink. Details TBC.

The Route

At both starts, there will be a map with the Control Points set out for you to plot your route.

At each control point, place your card in the box. Any missed or wrongly punched checkpoints will mean disqualification from the event.

Please remember that this is an orienteering event, and NOT a race. Riders are invited to enter the ride on the understanding that it is for personal achievement only.

Medical Emergencies

In the event of needing first aid please contact Claire Critchison on 07970 009 989 giving clear directions or location markers to assist in locating you.  If the need is of a serious nature please call 999, and then 07970 009989.

ALL riders are required to provide their own hydration & energy bars.  Water will be available from each start point, and the finish.  There will also be a watering station at North Court Down (near TV mast) for the 7 Hills competitors and at Sandown for the 14 Hills competitors.

Special notes

  • A road descent down Cheverton Shute will need extra care.
  • Out of bounds sections that do not represent bridle or cycle paths will be marshaled this year and will carry a half hour penalty if used (even by mistake!!) Please make a special note of these when plotting your route.
  • YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO USE FOOTPATHS.
  • A pump, toolkit and spare tube(s) is recommended in order to help yourself or others in the event of minor breakdown.

All riders, friends and family are very welcome to join us at the finish point, with free parking, music and refreshments.

Please be aware that videos and photographs may be taken of this event for publicity purposes. If you have any objections to your picture being used please advise the registration staff.

If you have any further queries then please email info@sunseaandcycling.com or telephone 01983 823070.

ENJOY YOUR RIDE…

This event is organised and run using the software SPORTident and this is included in your entry fee.
SPORTident equipment is used to identify, time and score competitors in many different types of event. The competitor carries a small electronic SI-Card. This is dipped into electronic stations, which are located at each checkpoint.

At the end of the ride, the contents of the SI-Card are downloaded into a computer. Competitors are immediately given a printout that provides a summary of their performance. The results are also uploaded onto our website.
